You must register for Self Assessment by 5 October 2024 if you need to send a tax return for the 2023/24 tax year and have not sent one before.How to register - if you're self-employed:
1. Sign in to your HMRC business tax account (or create one if you don't have it).2. Add Self Assessment to your list of services.
3. You'll receive a letter with your Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR) number within 10 working days.
4. You'll also receive an activation code for your business tax account within 7 working days.
5. Once you have both, log in and activate your account to file your tax return.
How to register - if you're not self-employed:
1. Complete form SA1 online or print and post it to HMRC.2. You can find the SA1 form on the GOV.UK website.
Who Needs to Register
You likely need to register if in the last tax year:- You were self-employed and earned over £1,000
- You were a landlord and earned over £2,500 from property.
- You were a partner in a partnership.
- Your total taxable income was above £100,000
- You had to pay the High Income Child Benefit Charge.
If you're unsure whether you need to register, consult an accountant or use the HMRC tool to check if you need to send a tax return.
Remember, if you've registered for Self Assessment before but didn't send a return last year, you'll need to register again to reactivate your account
